Who has the money these days for expensive flowers and candy? Great, if the cash is readily available. But if not, here are some inexpensive and thoughtful gift ideas that Mom will remember and cherish.
Inexpensive Gift Ideas for Mother's Day
Instead of a gift, why not give Mom a home-made coupon book filled with projects she needs done around the house? For instance, offer to mow the lawn, weed the flower bed, clean the floors, prepare a gourmet dinner, etc. Moms will appreciate the extra effort. And then, after the chores are completed, stick around and chat with Mom for a while. That will mean even more!
Take Mom on a Picnic:
It doesn't have to be champagne and caviar. A few crackers and cheese will do just fine. Take her to a park on her special day, and spread out a blanket, open a bottle of sparkling juice, and she will be delighted! And for dessert, she would probably love home-made cookies (although they could come from a mix) or a simple fruit salad. The picnic doesn't have to be elaborate, just well thought out.
Ask Ahead of Time what Mom Would Like
She might have something picked out already, maybe a special shirt or handbag. Then go to the mall, find the item and write down the item number. Have the sales person hold it for 24 hours. Then do a Google search for that item. (Cell phone apps have a feature that will do that on the spot.) If it's not available cheaper somewhere else, go back to the store and ask the sales person if it will be on sale any time between now and Mother's Day. If not, paying full price is a possibility. Or ask siblings to split the cost.
Shop at Warehouse Clubs the Week before Mother's Day
It's amazing what is available at Sam's and Costco around holidays. A fully loaded basket full of bath soaps and lotions will run less then $50 and Mom will think she is really getting pampered. But hurry, these items go fast as the holiday gets closer. So check once a week at least three weeks before.
Finally, even if there is no money available for a fancy gift, just spending time with Mom on her big day will mean the world. Live out of town? Plan a surprise trip home, even if it means taking a day off of work. Mother's Day only comes once a year, and most people have only one mom!
