50% off here, 60% off there. Sales are popping up everywhere. It used to be that shoppers could expect big sales at certain times....When retailers are clearing out Winter inventory to get ready for spring, or after the holidays. But now it seems, stores are basically advertising sales every other day, which can leave the average consumer bewildered. How can shoppers tell if they are getting a bargain, or not?
How to Find the Best Deals
First of all, never pay full price for anything. As soon as that new outfit gets home, the same item will probably go on sale for 20% less than the price on that tag. So make sure that (a) it's something really special and worth buying, and (b) it's a rock-bottom price. Be willing to walk away if the price is too high. For instance, if a sweater is marked full price but the sales person says that item was marked down last weekend 40% for a "special" sale, don't buy it! Wait until there is another "special" sale. They never have just one. And don't be afraid to lose out on that top. There will be more where that came from.
Also, if this is a favorite store, get on the mailing list. That way, "VIP's" will get first dibs on promotions, and should receive coupons in their e-mail box. Also, certain high-end stores like Neiman Marcus offer customers special "two hour events" where they send e-mails about certain items going on sale only during a certain time period that day, say between 11:30 and 1:30. After 1:30, the items go back down to regular price.
Keep in Contact with Sales People
They will not only provide a tremendous help in the store, but they are the inside source for big sales, and will usually call their favorite customers well in advance of promotions and in-store events. Also, if they get to know certain shoppers' tastes, they will often hold a particularly popular item if it's one their clients would especially like.
Get to know Certain Stores' Sale Patterns
If a certain store offers special deals every four weeks, many customers can actually set their calendars and plan accordingly. It's not rocket science. Shoppers who have been loyal customers for years and know the ins and outs of the retailer, can really save big when it comes to sale day. In fact, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get to the shop a couple days early and see if the sales person can hold that item for 48 hours. That way, consumers don't have to make a mad dash to the store at eight in the morning!
But for those sales where the retailer is putting out special merchandise just for the big day, it's important to get there the minute those doors open. A good example is Nordstrom's semi-annual sale. This high end retailer is legendary for their shoes. So if one knows that a certain size goes fast, get there the minute the sale starts, otherwise the cute shoes will be out the door!
Don't Buy Something Just Because it is on Sale
A good rule of thumb: Don't buy anything that is not truly one-of-a-kind. Unless it is really spectacular, don't waste the money. Another sale is right around the corner.
